View Full Version : [RELEASE] loopX Skin

loopforever
06-18-2003, 05:59 PM
Skin: loopX
Version: 1.01 Full Release
Download (current): http://www.infinityservers.com/directadmin/skins/loopX.tar.gz

Supports DirectAdmin 1.162: http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=221

Skin is sopen source (somewhat-open source ;)): It may be freely modified for personal/business use. But may not be redistributed in any form without my permission.

Known Issues:

- File manager does to recognize the header image after navigating through a few folders. [RESOLVED]
- Some files are not passed a |domain| token and cause the skin to show "none" in place of the domain on certain pages. [PARTIALLY RESOLVED]
- "Quick Help" links are not active on User Panel

Installation:

1) Download the skin to your personal computer
2) In your reseller account, go to the skin management feature
3) Browse for the loopX.tar.gz file on your computer, and give the skin the name "loopX"
4) Click Upload to upload and install the skin

Enjoy!

Skin is open source, but may not be redistributed without my permission.
If you're controlling redistribution, then it's really not open source, as the term actually happens to be a trademark. See: http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition_plain.php
1) Download the skin to your personal computer
2) In your reseller account, go to the skin management feature
3) Browse for the loopX.tar.gz file on your computer, and give the skin the name "loopX"
4) Click Upload to upload and install the skin
Does it only work on the reseller level, or will it work on the admin level as well?

Jeff

The skin works on all levels Admin through User. :)

The definition of open source in this instance, is: free to make modifications to, but not free to distribute without my permission. Anyone who doesn't like it, doesn't have to use my skin. Simple enough.

jlasman
06-19-2003, 01:01 PM
That's fine with me, loopforever.

I pointed out the definition because at least some of the people who see your skin and who see that you call it open source will be tempted to do whatever they want with it.

And if you've called it open source you may have a problem enforcing any reserved rights, since "open source" is a trademark for a license offering certain specific rights which you're reserving.

For me, I have no problem with it, and will certainly consider your skin.

In fact, let me be one of the first to say...

Thanks for your work!

Jeff

Thanks Jeff :)!

Glad you guys like it!

Btw, I've just rephrased the "open source" part :).

jlasman
06-19-2003, 01:12 PM
You're very welcome, loopforever....

As you may have noticed from the "tone" of my message, I'm very "open source" supportive. I built what may have been the first webhosting company in the U.S. (definitely one of the first ten) back in '94, using the first Slackware distribution of Linux, kernel version 0.9.

But I also believe in other forms of distribution, including the BSD license (similar to open source except that people who use stuff licensed with a BSD license are not required to make derivative works open source as well).

I also own (though no longer keep up to date or even use anymore) a BSDI commercial unix license; we ran a small ISP on it a few years ago.

Gogeta found a bug where you can't apply the skin to a single user (Apply to All Users works fine, however). We'll have that fixed in v1.1 (couple days max).

to chnage the image, just replace header.jpg with your own header :)

/images/header.jpg

i have attatched the default so you know its the correct one also.

Once you have made your own or edited that one just upload the skin once again and overwrite the previous skin.

There may also be a way to just replace the current uploaded one although im not sure where it is... and have no DA to check :(

I've skipped the .99 Beta release altogether and jumped straight to 1.0 Full Release. There are a number of critical updates in this release and I suggest EVERYONE upgrading.

This release is compatible with the latest version of DA (1.16) and supports all new tokens.

.95 Beta users, please upgrade as soon as possible :). Thanks!

What about feature creep?

Personally I don't consider it ready for use until there's complete instructions for clients.

I'd like to use it when we go live with clients, but to do so I'll have to have a complete instruction weboste (which I'm willing to do myself).

So I'm ready to put it on our fully-licensed "reference" system, which I keep on a static IP# at my home to play with and learn from.

Two quick questions:

1) does 1.0 look substantially the same as your .jpg screenshots?

2) do I have your permission to put your .jpg screenshots on a page on my site to advertise our DirectAdmin panels?

Thanks.

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

1.0 looks nearly identical to .95, but many of the bugs that would have made me want to keep it as beta have been resolved by me using a different method of applying the skin. This new method will allow me to release faster, cleaner upgrades whenever a DA release warrants it.

As for the screenshots, feel free, however, they're really low res, so you might want to take your own, and use that.

Another thing to note, is that although this is a full release, the "Quick Help" links are not active yet, because the site-helper.com website is of little use because they use the standard theme, and I use...my own :p.

You could always make a LoopX version of the sitehelper site :) Althought it would take a long time im sure it would look great.

Also, I am having problems getting DA to set that skin to certain users, I can set it to my own users fine but I cant set it to any users other than my own not even myself. Every time I do it always reverts back to "Default". Any feedback on this matter

As for doing that, I guess i could. I might charge maybe a $2.00 fee, i might not lol. Just depends on how quick they want it. If anyone would like custom logo for the skin they can email me at BBryant@BrycoPC.com. Other than that, thanks for your uplifting comments :)

If you decide to do this let me suggest nice maybe javascripted popup windows with no addressbar, buttonbar, menubar, or statusbar and a close link :) i have the javascript to do it if you need it:).

If someone/group of people is willing to create a help site, I think it would really assist in the promotion of the loopX skin, and DA software altogether.

If someone is really going to do this, let me know, and I will package it with the skin and give you credit.

Thanks!

jlasman

Okay...

Here's what I'm thinking...

Obviously this will take time, and I have to consider the value of my time.

No, I'm not asking for money.

But if I were to do it and yet others would also benefit from it...

then what I'd like would be an input of HELP from others :) .

For example...

I'm an idea man. And an analysis man. I can write a userguide, and I can do "straight" html coding. But I'm not a java guy, I'm not a flash guy, and I'm not a graphics guy.

Anybody interested in offering some help?

If so, I'll set up a "helpers" mailing list immediately and we can get started on the help site. And I'll set up the skin, and our help system, on my testbed system (I keep a copy of DirectAdmin running from a static IP# at my home, just for testing purposes) so we can all see it and test it as it fleshes out.

I'm ready with some ideas I've already sketched out... so we could get started on this soon.

Let me know :) . Either by posting here or by an email to the address in my sig, or both.

Thanks.

Jeff

I would offer to assist in the creation of the documentation, but to be honest, I really have my hands full just maintaining the skin.

I'm more than happy, however, to help you guys out with any questions you many have concerning how things work with the skin, in comparision to the default skin and such.

Just e-mail/PM/reply here if you need anything :).

jlasman
07-20-2003, 07:58 PM
Thanks, Matt. That's more than enough from you; you've already done plenty :) .

I'm suggesting emailing me because my email address in my sig, which is at the bottom of every post, and most of us don't list our email address, which means there's lots of clicks to go through.

I understand that once I've got your email address (this goes for everyone, not just you, Matt) that you'll feel a certain commitment, but frankly, that's exactly what I'm looking for :) .

I'm sure that you, Matt, know firsthand, how tough it can be to commit to something to help an entire community, and since I'm making that commitment as well, I'd like to see at least a few others make the same commitment.

So let's get started :) .

(Yes, I know, I smile a lot; that's because I like to think positive!)

I do promise that any email addresses I get will be held in strict confidence and used only for correspondence about the documentation project and for signup to the documentation project mailing list, and that anyone will be able to unsubscribe from the mailing list at any time without even getting me involved. Once the mailing list is officially set up I'll repost with a link to the signup page.

Just to get you guys off on the right foot, I've thought of this...

Speak to Mark about getting a tarred up copy of site-helper.com, or recursively download it and its images. If you'd like, I can do this for you.

Assign one or two people the task of taking new screenshots, and overwriting the old ones.

Assign three or four people the task of going through a sub-section of the site-helper.com Admin/Reseller/User pages and confirm that the text matches the updated screenshots.

If you do it this way, you can probably get the whole site-helper.com site recreated in about 2 or 3 days.

Just a suggestion for when people begin to sign up :)...

Edit: WOW, this thread has gotten over 100 page views today, and is also the most viewed thread on the entire forum! Thanks for your support everyone!

Would be appreciated; let's wait until Mark chimes in and says we can do it. Since I'm now working almost exclusively on Linux, I'll need a copy with the text in linux line-endings, but that's easy enough for me to do here.

As you know, Matt, those 2 or 3 days can end up taking a lot longer ;) . However I hope we start soon; I'd like to see it done by the end of the month; at least the first iteration.

I already have two iterations in mind. The first one, which will be an almost copy of the current site, but with the changes necessitated by the new graphics, and the second one, in which each DirectAdmin page will have it's own hot-linkable help page (the way Plesk does it).

At least four or five were me; I also looked during a quick visit to the office (to bring a fan over; it's easier to find parking on a Sunday :) ). But that still leave 95 from others. WOW from me, too!

As license owners, you are more than welcome to take anything you want from the current site-helper.com page and turn it into your own customized guide.

I'm already a bit behind on maintaining it, as we are putting out so many minor updates. It will be difficult to maintain over the next 6-8 months, as the features will just be pouring in. You'd have to watch http://www.directadmin.com/versions.php very carefully. :)

Jeff wrote:

Our current default / power user skins take you right to the appropriate site-helper page when you click on the help link. Or are we thinking of different things?

Very similar, John. What Plesk does is opens up a tiny window with just the help information for that page.

Of course once our pages are done and maintained, you'll be welcome to them as well :)

I've always wondered how to fix that tiny spacing issue on the right side... :)

SH-Lloyd
07-25-2003, 08:48 PM
Or simply add to the body:
<body leftmargin="0" rightmargin="0" topmargin="0" bottommargin="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0">
That will also work if you aren't using CSS. I would reccomend using both methods for best compatibility in all browsers. Marginwidth & marginheight are needed for browsers like Opera :)

That may be true in theory, but I've recently started using Linux on my desktop at the office and I find that almost all sites look completely different based on whether I'm using Mozilla or Konqueror. And I'm talking about relatively well-known and presumably properly done sites.

Please see the posts starting on page 3. The reason Quick Help is not active is because site-helper.com is for use with the default skin, and it will confuse, rather than help clients of people using the loopX skin.

you have to edit every sinlge page on users folder and resellers folder you will find the help links looks like this :

|?HELP_SECTION=reseller.site-helper.com/modify.html|

you can simply replace this line with :

<a href="http://yourdomain.com/documentations> Help </a>

or just simply remove the link and provide the help documentations through you site just like i did :)

I downloaded the skin and it looks great :) But I might have stumbled across a bug / feature. When logged in as a reseller, I go to the User Control Panel and into any option. When I click the home button at the top-right I would expect to go back to the User Control Panel but I'm returned to the Reseller Control Panel. This is frustrating as I have not yet found a way (except for the browsers back-button) to return to the User Control Panel rather than the Reseller Control Panel.

Hi guys - I'd like to apologize to everyone who uses this skin...my lack of updates are really unacceptable :p...

I've been insanely busy the last few months and keeping up to date with all of John's releases is just not a possibility right now. I do appreciate the nice PMs and e-mails I've recieved concerning the skin, especially those from people that moved to DA because you liked it so much. It makes me feel good knowing I was able to help out, at least a little.

I've officially donated this skin to Mark and John, so if they're interested, they can keep it updated with all their releases.

And lastly, I'd like to apologize to anyone who has PMed me and never recieved a response. I hope those people have found answers to their questions, and I'm sorry that I never got back to you!

Talk to you all soon!

The skin is no longer supported nor updated

The options may not have been there when it was last updated, therefore why it would be not in the skin.

My person suggestion to everyone is to not use this skin. You'll find out why very soon. ;)
