They're also a little misleading on what's included with the license. I assume by "full technical support" they mean 90 days technical support... (Like the DA-bought license.)
ProWebUK

Unless the seller is actually DirectAdmin (John / Mark) the legitimacy of the auction im assuming would depend on the type of license it was sold as.
If it was sold directly as a lifetime license with a genuine value of $299 USD i would assume its perfectly legal.
If the license was sold through DirectAdmin as a lifetime license under the internal pricing structure (with an approved internal partner) i would assume its against the DirectAdmin agreement.
As stated on the pricing page; 'Internal licenses must always be sold with a server (reselling the licenses by themselves is not permitted)'
From the look of things, it is either John or Mark who have placed the offer, or it is likely to be an internal license sold against the agreement set by DirectAdmin... To be honest i cant really see a $299 license being sold for $99....
The only one who can confirm this is legal / illegal are the DirectAdmin staff and im sure either way they will do what they need.

I'm confused... I'd love to get a $99 license... but something doesn't sound right here. How is this possible?

10-30-2003, 09:03 AM
internal licenses go from $49 up to $89 for lifetime if you install - my reasoning for thinking if its not John or Mark, then its internal, As stated in my previous post - the only people who can say if its legal or not would be Mark and / or John.
Chris
I'm confused too but that's a normal state of mind for me.

I'd guess its an offer made by directadmin to help out with hostauctioneer which as a lot of you probably know is run by two-a-t who is a member here and a customer of DirectAdmin. As thats the case id guess its for Host-Auctioneer ONLY and the offer not to be passed on, although once again we will need Mark or John to confirm this.

Seller : DirectAdmin
That shoulda been their first clue :D
Yes, everyone, Mark and John were kind enough to offer some special priced licenses on the site both to help generate some additional traffic and to gain more traffic to DA from the 3 issues of advertising that the auction site is going to have in Ping! Zine starting with the November issue that should be in mailbox's next week.
So, it's a double purpose offering. More traffic to HostAuctioneer.com and more traffic from magazine readers to DA.
But, now that the cat's outta the bag, I hope there are still some of the DA listings left when the magazine hits! Otherwise the idea behind them drawing more traffic to DA will be kinda mute point! I have a feeling after the smoke clears, there won't be any left 24 hours from now except the one license being offered at auction with NO RESERVE :D
I've said this to them in person but I'll say it here as well.. thanks Mark and John. Just add this to the things that make you guys and DA better than any of the others.. I guarantee none of the others would do something like this to help one of their client's get more traffic!

And just to clarify, you can do whatever you wish with the license, short of reselling it to someone else. If you bid on it, the license should be for personal use.

I should clarify this for everyone:
If you click on one of the $99 "Buy Now" listings and just place a bid, it cancels the "Buy Now" option and turns the listing into a regular auction to the highest bidder.
If you want to take advantage of the "Buy Now" price, you MUST click the "Buy Now" icon to do so. That is the ONLY way to get the license at the $99 price.
Happy bidding!

Correct on the first part :)
If you win an auction or use the "Buy Now" option to win, you will be sent an email by the site telling you that you have won and giving you the seller's contact email. The seller is also sent an email giving them your contact info.
From there it's between the seller and the buyer to settle payment just like it would be on eBay or any other auction site. The actual money transactions are between you (buyer & seller).
HostAuctioneer.com is only involved in money transactions if money is due to the site for the listing services itself (IE listing upgrades, final value fee, etc) OR if the auction was listed by HostAuctioneer (such as the banner rotation slot auction currently listed).
Hope that clarifies it :)
Thanks to all of you for signing up and getting involved in the DirectAdmin listings. We hope you'll stick around and use the site even after those are gone!
Here's a little advance notice to any of you who may want to create your own listings and sell something - Starting with the November issue, which should be arriving in mail boxes some time next week, HostAuctioneer.com will be running 1/2 page ads in Ping! Zine magazine and we are expecting a major increase in traffic to the site (Ping! Zine has over 14,000 print subscribers!). So, now is the time to post your offers and get them in front of the new traffic we're expecting (Like DirectAdmin did!)!
If you have any questions about the process and selling on the site, contact me and I'll be happy to go over it with you!
To find out more about Ping! Zine magazine, go here: http://pingzine.com

1) Log into you HA account.
2) After you log in, you are taken to your "User's control panel" screen. From there you click "Sellers Contact Info" in the right column (2nd from the bottom).
3) That will show you the sellers of any auctions you won and should show the "Buy Now" listing. From there, click the actual listing link "Special $99 DirectAdmin lifetime license! *BUY NOW*" and it will take you to the actual listing you won which will say "CLOSED".
4) From there if you click on DirectAdmin's seller name it should take you to DirectAdmin/Mark's info screen.
5) Click "Leave Feedback" from there and it should allow you to do it. NOTE: It will ask for your login name and password on the top of the feedback form. This must be put in exactly the same way you log into your account on the site or it will not accept it. Even though you are already logged in, it asks again to verify your account.
Because the site only allows you to leave feedback on sellers that you have actually won auctions from, you have to access the feedback from the actual listing that you won. And you can only do that from your control panel and the listings you won since those listings are closed and no longer active. It keeps people from leaving false feedback on someone that they didn't actually have any dealings with.
That should take care of it. Let me know if you still have any problems! :)
Note: Remember, the site does have a "Help Section" which you can access both via the top menu bar which should be on every page and via the "Help Column" on the right side of the main page. The help section should give answers for most things. The section for "Feedback" is under the "General" topic. :)

All of the $99 "Buy Now" licenses that were listed have been taken. All that is left is 2 "No Reserve" listings that will go to the highest bidder at the end of the time frame they are listed for.
One of those 2 WAS a "Buy Now" but because someone placed a regular bid and didn't click the "Buy Now" button, it voided the "Buy Now" option and made it a regular auction with no reserve.
Hope that clarifies :)

No Reserve... will be sold to the highest bidder! Place your bid now if you want the cheapest DA lifetime license ever! ;)
I don't know if Mark & John will offer any others this cheap!
EDIT: Remember- If you have already won one of the DA auction listings on this site (Including "Buy Now" listings), you can not win another one. These are promotional offers by Mark & John and each person/company is only allowed to have 1 license under these offers. If you already have a license from these offers, please do not bid on any other DA licenses there. Unless Mark or John give notice otherwise, this limit is still in place

I hesitated a long time during the last auction to ask a friend to get a license so that I could setup a test box, but I'll get a sysadmin instead.
That's my only problem with DA right now, it's that we cannot have a test license limited to one domain. I'm transitioning from one server to another and the way I can test things on the old setup before applying it to the new one is much better than to test it on an internal vanilla RH.

Hey Matt,
You can as long as you have not won one of the auctions before. The only restriction that I am aware of is that there is only 1 of these special licenses allowed per person/company. So, even if you have licenses you are allowed one of these. But, only one. And the license can't be "resold" or transferred.
Mark can clarify it more if you (or anyone else) has questions about the restriction.

A reserve is where the seller sets a minimum cost for the sale, for example
Reserve: £50
If the auction ends and the highest bid is less than £50, the auction is usually just left and the items not sold, if the highest bid is over £50 the sale must be made..

sander815...
When you placed a bid on this auction, were you trying to use the "Buy it Now" or did you put a bid in the box on the right?
http://www.hostauctioneer.com/item.php?id=e26fe9c95ad4f5a34c4d12f6225480c2
As it states in this listing, to win at the "Buy it Now" price, you must click the "Buy it Now" image or else it doesn't make you the winner at that price. You apparently placed a regular bid on the auction which cancelled the Buy it Now option. You are only allowed one license under the auction offers.
The reason I ask is you have also placed a bid on the "No Reserve" listing here:
http://www.hostauctioneer.com/item.php?id=74aebaa424e37de14b730b1f0ff75e7d
Which one did you want? If you want the Buy it Now offer for $129, then we can close that listing now and you will be the winner. If you bid on that listing by mistake, please let me know so we can remove your bid and you will only be bidding on the No Reserve listing.
And, a note to clear up one of your earlier questions: These DirectAdmin licenses are being offered by DirectAdmin itself, not a reseller. You are welcome to verify this with Mark from DirectAdmin as he is the one who authorizes each DA listing.

hmm, this bidding thing is not fair.....
i see the clock ticking to zero, and when its zero, adn i refresh it, it starts at 4 min again...whys that?
Agreed. If there is a deadline posted for a auction, then it should not be extended by 4 to 6 minute increments each time the closing time approaches just to boost the final bid amounts.
If this is a method to ensure a minimum bid is actually received for the product, then I feel this is deceptive advertising. And as well possibly fraudulent as well. I will not be recommending this Auction service because of that. I find this practice very unprofessional and deceptive as well.
Auction was supposed to close at 07:27 AM and it finally closed at
Auction ends: Apr. 01, 2004 - 08:12
Almost a full hour later.
And as well, the timing of the bids being placed do not jive with the times indicated on the history.
Where it says
Ends within :
that time does not correspond with the times of bids that the history shows the bid was placed at. For example, I made a bid with 21 seconds to close at 07:27AM and the time according to the history showed as 07:32. A five minute difference.
Congrats to wizzler with their successful winning bid of $205.00 usd.
As far as HostAuctioneer is concerned I will not be returning. Not unless they clean up their act.

What you are referring to is the site's "Anti-Sniping auto extend" feature. This feature is in place to prevent the use of "auction sniper" software which will attempt to sneak a bid in within the last seconds of an auction and "snipe" it from the high bidder.
This system will auto-extend the listing for 5 minutes if there is a high bidder within the last 120 seconds of the listing time. This makes the use of "auction sniper" software to unfairly place bids in the last seconds of a listing less effective and allow legitimate bidders to have their fair chance. It makes the auction more like a real-life auction. In a real life auction, is someone bids in the last seconds of the auction, then it causes the auction to continue for a couple more minutes until there are no more last second bids.
We put this system in place so the people who physically place their bids will have an advantage over the "snipers" because most software designed to do this will only watch for 1 end time and will not check to see if the auction has been extended or re-listed.
The option was requested by several of our sellers but if there is too much confusion or disagreement with the way it protects actual bidders over auction "sniper" software bidders then we will disable it in the future.

Just my perception, it seems a little deceptive that this wasn't disclosed publically before hand.

Actually, the addition of this feature is publically posted on the site. It was included with several other newly added features which we posted about on 03/02/2004 in the "News" section on the Home/front page of the site. The announcement was first posted at the end of January and updated after we added WebStores at the at the end of February which is why the date stamp is March 2nd.
You can see the announcement on the home page of the site which links to this page: http://www.hostauctioneer.com/viewnew.php?id=a8b36e2cf01e6b6e58f0f11d5ba0125f
