I've added a shell account to my box which should have FTP access as well. Though it looks like ProFTPd uses a different passwd file to authenticate it's users.
What steps are needed to give that shell user FTP access as well?
Thanks!

You can create ftp accounts through DirectAdmin.
http://site-helper.com/email.html#create
Proftpd passwords are stored in /etc/proftpd.passwd (at least in Debian)

That's not what I mean.
I made a shell account from the command line; so it has no hosting whatsoever. Now I want to make it so that the shell account gets FTP access as well, without using /etc/passwd in the ProFTPd config.
