The changes made here seem to be broken every day I am emailed with the error, which is like this.
newsyslog: bad value '695' for process number in /var/run/proftpd.pid
newsyslog: bad value '48303' for process number in /var/run/httpd.pid
newsyslog: bad value '620' for process number in /var/run/exim.pid
newsyslog: bad value '620' for process number in /var/run/exim.pid
I haven't looked into it much yet, but are others getting the same?

After upgrading DA, I am getting the same error email everyday with FreeBSD 4.9.
Same here with FreeBSD 5.2.1

Hello,
Those were added to the /etc/newsyslog.conf file.
That error is very strange.. I found the code that generates that error ( http://www.google.ca/search?q=cache:_OekOh2uRA0J:unix.za.net/docs/freebsdsrc/usr.sbin/newsyslog/newsyslog.c+newsyslog:+bad+value+for+process+number&hl=en&lr=lang_en )
and it checks to make sure those numbers are within a certain range. In this case, 5 and 99999. The pid's shown are within that range, so something is wrong.
What happens when you run:
newsyslog -v
... a more clear description of the error should appear..

Here's what I get every hour on the hour every since upgrade. FreeBSD 4.8
newsyslog: illegal flag in config file -- N
Looks different. In fact I get this even when I try
# newsyslog -v
so... Any help?
thanks

well the logs are actually rotating, so I am just gonna edit the crontab so it stops emailing me the errors and ignore it.

It would be nice if we got updated why this is happening though.

I ran the commands found in http://www.directadmin.com/features.php?id=465, and presto, the emails stopped. :)
So I guess it works!

I'm still getting the error on FreeBSD 4.x (I know, wrong forum, but right thread!) after running the commands in http://www.directadmin.com/features.php?id=465 - looking through the file, it's still got N's all over the place, so I'm assuming it hasn't done the exchange properly.
What should / shouldn't it have?
