when using RHEL + cPanel, i had a service (don't know if it's done by RH or cPanel) called "chkservd" that checked the main server (httpd, mysqld, popd, smtpd, etc.) status and, in case of error, tried to (re)start it and sent me an E-Mail
is there something similar to that for DirectAdmin on FreeBSD?

It sounds like a CPanel service.

DA will automatically try to restart services every minute. If it fails it will send you a private message in the DA Message System. Depending on your DA Message Systems that may result in you getting an email.

hmmm... probably "Email a copy of all messages to" ;)
