hi everyone,

i just got a new client who hosts their mail on an internal ms exchange server. I setup mail.domain.com to their server ip, took off the local delivery (took the domain out of /etc/virtual/domains)

and now when people try to send them mail i get these errors in the logs:

2004-09-20 17:19:22 H=shawmail.shawcable.com (bpd2mo1no.prod.shawcable.com) [64.59.128.220] F=<myemail@domain.com> rejected RCPT <theiremail@otherdomain.com>: authentication required

trying to figure out what is going on, is this a problem with dns, exim config or their exchange server?

thanks

Who is "shawmail.shawcable.com"?

It looks as if you're trying to send email through shawmail.shawcable.com to an account that's NOT on their server, so it's being denied.

As in fact it should be if their account is not on the shawmail.shawcable.com server, since that would be relaying, and is exactly what spammers try to do.

Note that I'm not accusing you of spamming; I'm merely pointing out that by attempting to send email through an external server shawmail.shawcable.com that is neither your server nor theirs, it looks like it.
