View Full Version : Catch-all doesn't work...
Hi,
I've been testing things out and noticed that catch-all didn't work. I configured in DA to send all e-mail anything@domain to the main account.
The main account receives mail fine, but anything else would return this:
550 Unknown user
This is with the catch-all feature turned on!
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Nich
I've discovered more strange configurations...
I believe that I'm not configured for 'virtual domains or virtual users (not sure what its called)' such that if I e-mail john@domain1 and john@domain2 , they will all go to john's account.
I want to be able to e-mail john@domain1 and john@domain2 (since they are 2 seperate people), and have them go to their respected email accounts.
The current way I login to Webmail/Squirrelmail is just typing in usernames like "john". This wouldn't be the proper way to login if there are multiple john's. How do I get this to work AND how do I get it so when I login to webmail, I would have to specify john@domain ???
Thanks!

Hey,
The main login (the actual account login) of any domain will not have to use the @domain.com part on the email login. (All other email logins for that domain will have to use the @domain.com part with their login.)
You simply can't have two "john" logins to DA (actual DA accounts)
However, you can have "john@domain.com" and "john@otherdomain.com"
David
Thanks for the reply and clarification.
But here is the problem now:
I created a john@domain.com virtual account. I can login to webmail using the username "john@domain.com"
But when I send e-mail to john@domain, I get a returned e-mail saying 550 Unknown user. It is trying to look for an ACTUAL system user named 'john' (with a real system login account).
???

Hey,
Take a look here:

Mainly at number 6. Perhaps something got out-a-whack along the way.
At least it's a start.

All the settings are correct... but users still don't work. :(

If you'd like some of us who know how to test to help you, please help us help you.
A good start would be a real username at a real domain name.
BTW, you know you shouldn't be getting mail at the main login name (username, as opposed to username@domain name), don't you?
If you do, you're passing your site admin password in clear text.

Hi Jeff,
Do you have any Instant Messaging avail that I can talk to you?
Thanks!
Nich
I have another server that I am sending e-mail from so I can check what sendmail error the system is reporting. When I send e-mail from here TO my directadmin server I get this:
<nic@topmusicradio.com>... Deferred: Name server: topmusicradio.com.: host name lookup failure
The domain on the DA server is topmusicradio.com and a pop3 e-mail account was created with the username nic@topmusicradio.com

Hey,
It appears that the server you are trying to send mail from is having a hard time finding the DA server...
<nic@topmusicradio.com>... Deferred: Name server: topmusicradio.com.: host name lookup failure
I can telnet to port 25 of mail.topmusicradio.com... So, it's responding...

Can you try sending an e-mail to nic@topmusicradio.com
Okay I am getting a different error now when I tried to e-mail from a totally different e-mail account:
A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its
recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed:
nic@topmusicradio.com
SMTP error from remote mailer after RCPT TO:<nic@topmusicradio.com>:
host mail.topmusicradio.com [209.123.107.232]:
550 Unknown user
It says Unknown user! This is because there isn't any "nic" account on the system. It is somehow not recognizing the virtual user 'nic'

Hey,
Yep, I get the same thing sending an email to "nic@topmusicradio.com".
How is the user created in DA?

David
This is how I created and setup the site:
1) Logged into DA with "admin"
2) Clicked "Reseller Level" on the right
3) Clicked Add New User and created account "tmr" for topmusicradio.com
4) Logged out of "admin" and Logged In as "tmr"
5) Clicked Created Pop3 Account and created an account of "nic@topmusicradio.com"
If I e-mail tmr@topmusicradio.com (which is the system account), I receive the e-mail fine. If I e-mail nic@topmusicradio.com (which is the virtual account), I get the "unknown user".
**EVEN if there was NO nic@topmusicradio.com setup, the CATCH-ALL should kick in and pick up the mail. Yet if you send mail to anything@topmusicradio.com, you get the same "unknown user" error.**
Thanks!

Hey,
Take a look at "/etc/virtual/topmusicradio.com/passwd" and see if the user is in there...
Catch-all - You probably did but, did you choose one email address to be the catchall email?
