He has got a point, to some extent. MariaDB is fully open source and compatible with MySQL (and the company is run by the original developer of MySQL). It has a couple of new database engines as well. The future of MySQL is far from clear and nobody can foresee what the guys at Oracle are planning.

That said I am still planning to use MySQL but will keep a close look at what Oracle is doing and how MariaDB is developing.
