A few Basic questions about DA

I just purchased a dedicated server running red hat 9 and direct admin.
I am starting to develop my site, and made the changes at networksolutions . While I wait for the dns to update, is there a direct way to access my site using an IP ?
Just using my normal ip brings up the default apache "it works" page. same with http://localhost. I think my name server is not in the loop with the virtual hosting thing....

I installed VNC to the linux box, partialy because im new to linux and im learning.
With this idle time i was poking around and noticed a dns server config gui and well, had to run it. surprisingly there are no entries ? did DA install a second instance of bind unrelated to the red hat install ? this whole thing has made my eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep. when I wake up, Im sure Ill figure more out and ask more questions !

you need to allocated a dedicated IP address your domain and then you will see your page from that IP :)

you could go to your http://ip/domain

too bad, I hoped DA would allow users to work on there site during the dns transition.

Im surprised in a way, every single site I have created at every single host, gave a temprary URL in the welcome message that would point to my domain. That is still true of one of my sites now that does not have a dedicated ip, its on a liux box with a virtual host. I wonder how they managed to set up a temp URL...



What about the seperate http server and dns server. Does any know ?

You should be able to access your primary domain with http://serverip.com/~username

Justin (rumrugby) is in error; you do not need a dedicated IP# to see a hosted domain before DNS has propagated.

As jmstacey points out you can see your site easily enough, so depending on how you wrote your site, some parts of it may not work.

You should be able to ftp to your site by IP# as well.

Silly Me, I coulda just checked the email generated from DA and clicked the link !!

The learning curve is getting less steep by the day !
