Disappearing FTP user

Help!
I know this sounds crazy, but here's the scenario. I create an FTP account using DA. The account works and has no problems. Then within a day or two, the account is gone. Everything else on the server seems fine, but the account is removed somehow. I am able to recreate the account and log back in without problem, but within a day or two it will disappear again.

Any ideas?

That's quite strange. What's the username being used? is it shared hosting or IP based?

The ftp username being created is 'wichy'. I'm creating it using a DA reseller username of 'jeff'.

My host is Blue Virtual. I've got a dedicated server and have designated the reseller 'jeff' one of my IP's. There are several domain names on the same IP (including insidecreations.net, which is the one I'm creating the FTP user for).

It's very odd, and if I hadn't been in the hosting and programming business for a long time, I'd assume that I'm just doing something really stupid. However, I really think it's not me.

I couldn't say at this point. Perhaps make a backup of the file once you get it the way you want, wait for it to happen again, then do:

diff /etc/proftpd.passwd /etc/proftpd.passwd.back

to see if anything else is gone, and to check for any possible patterns.

It looked like it was doing ok because it went a week without dropping the user. Then bam, it's gone. This is driving me nuts.

No one has access to the server except for my host of course. I am in the process of setting up this server and the only accounts I have created are mine and the magic disappearing FTP account.

Does the user actually disappear from the conf file?

If so, does the date on the conf file change?

If it does, then look through the logs for who is logged in at that time and/or what me be happening at that time.

I know this is an old post, but it is the only one that I can find that has the same issue as me.

I have setup 3 users.
2 user have one domain in their account and the other has 3 domains.

In the account with 3 domains, lets call them:-
domain1.com
domain2.com
domain3.com
They all have the default user ftp account.
I then created an extra ftp account for domain2 called ftp and had this pointed to the public_ftp folder.

All works well but every few days the ftp ftp account disappears.
It still works, it is just not displayed by DA :confused:
I have looked in /usr/local/directadmin/data/users/abc/ftp.passwd
and the account is still there.

And then today I had an even stranger issue.
I removed domain3 from the user account and ALL ftp info for the remaining domains has gone from DA. Again the ftp accounts that are not displayed in dommain1 & domain2 still work and the details appear in /usr/local/directadmin/data/users/abc/ftp.passwd bbut not in DA.

Does anyone have any ideas why DA says there are no ftp accounts (even the default ones that you can not delete) but there are and they still work :confused:

Sounds like you have some of the weirdness that I have experienced. Unfortunately I can't help, because I still have the same problem. Every so many days, weeks, or months, all of my FTP users disappear. No idea why or how.

It seems I have found a bug with ftp-accounts:

If account have dedicated IP, then all additioonal ftp-accounts disapears from data/users/*/ftp.passwd when new domain is added to that account. (Tested with DA v1.23.1 on FreeBSD 4.10 & RedHat 9.0)

Can someone else confirm that bug?

DA has confirmed this bug and will correct it in the next update.

Just wondering which of our issues has been confirmed? All of them? I know they're all related to FTP users, but they all seem a bit different.

The disappearing ftp accounts when a user with a individual ip adds a second domain to his account.

Dec 10 is the esitmated date.

As stated in an earlier post, I know this is an old thread, but... We have this issue. Is there a fix for this?

By resetting the user password at admin level I am able to gain access via ftp.
