handling incoming mail with a script

Is there a way for a user to define a script that
will handle incoming e-mail, like putting
"|/home/user/bin/script" in $HOME/.forward?

the root user can edit /etc/virtual/<domain>/aliases but I dont think theres a certain file that can be set by the user since it goes by the domain
