Can we run DA on port 2222 but disable the auto-updates?

Yes,

Admin Panel -> Admin Settings -> "Use the automatic updater to automatically get the lastest version of DirectAdmin. "

uncheck that and updates won't be sent. You can still click "Update" yourself.
