I just got DA and though I think its great - its a lot different than what I'm used to using (Cpanel). I'm having a lot of trouble just getting a user/account/IP scheme together so that I can get my sites transferred to my new server.
I will not have resellers and for the most part I will be the only server administrator. I will have multiple sites that I will administer. What is the best way to do this? I can't seem to figure out how to assign multiple accounts and domains to the same admin user. I also can't figure out how to assign an IP address as owned rather than shared.
Do I need to bother with packages and resellers at all?
Also - I'm sure I'm missing the obvious - but how do I know which IP is assigned to which DNS server?

how to assign multiple accounts and domains to the same admin user. Now when you say admin user, I assume you mean you would like to administer multiple domains using a single user name and password. If this is correct you would do this using the user panel. This video will walk you through it. Click Here (http://linkdisk.com/demos/da/Add%20Domain.htm)
assign an IP address as owned rather than shared.
- goto reseller panel
- list modify account
- click on the account (user) you would like to change the IP
- click modify user
- set ip to
- click save
Do I need to bother with packages and resellers at all?
Yes you do, because even if you are not going to have resellers; you still need to use the reseller panel to set up your own hosting packages. So basically you use the user panel for your own domain(s). The reseller panel for your own hosing packages that you sell to your customers. And the admin panel is used to create other resellers.
Hope this helps -Jason

Forgot to answer this question.

- reseller panel
- ip asignment

Another important IP thing to know is:
- admin panel
- IP assignment
This allows you to add additional IPs that are bound to your server by your ISP (host). So in your case you are the only reseller so then you would asign all of the available IPs to the reseller admin (that's you). Otherwise they will be free and will not show up in your reseller panel for you to asign to your user, DNS ect.
So use the admin panel to assign IPs to resellers.
Use the reseller panel to assign IPs to users.
It's confusing at first, but it makes sence once you learn it.

Yeah I'm thouroghly confused. Is there a manual with this software? Their support page says "don't call" for support issues and rather to use "online chat", but I have never seen anyone online. Ack.
Edit: I mean is there a manual that describes the overall structure and relationships of the software. I have seen the manual that describes all the individual features. It's a good manual, but lacks an overview.

OK, using the tips in this thread I think I have figured a lot of it out. Thanks JD.
For users of Cpanel, this is a bit confusing to get started on. Some kind of manual that gives an overview would be helpful.
I'm also wondering what happened to tech support?

It is best to post your general how to questions in the forums.
If you need tech support then e-mail: support@directadmin.com
I have contacted them more than a few times myself and always get a fast and accurate answer.
Here are a couple of useful resources for you:

Yeah did that. I haven't recieve a response from them in over 24 hours. Kind of disconcerting considering that the site claims "responses in less than an hour".
Also - they say do not call them regarding technical support, rather use the live chat. But they have not been online in the last 2 days.
Very frustrating since I needed to get this up and running by the weekend. Luckily I figured it out.

I would assume so. I got two responses from them early in the day yesterday - then nothing.

Hello,
We always clear our email inboxes.. if it takes that long then something is up. Perhaps try using a different email address.
