View Full Version : Not impressed

I posted a question 4 days ago, taking the time and effort to make sure I posted in the correct forum. (heaven forbid I get "off topic")
Then I waited patiently, KNOWING that surely my question would be answered soon.... but, no luck.
Evidently, my question was far too stupid for any of you to grace with a response.
The one other question I asked this forum, was originally posted as a reply in another members thread. After awhile, (and no response) I theorized that maybe the reason I wasn't getting an answer was because I had posted it in the wrong place -ie:another member's thread. So, I created a new thread, asking the same question. This time, of course, the question was answered right away, along with a scolding about "multiple posts".
FYI, I am brand new at this stuff and may have many questions which you think are stupid. But, the whole purpose of this forum is to answer those questions.
I have a number of questions and problems... as I am just learning this. However, it is very discouraging when I can't get an answer.
So far, I am not impressed with the level of help that I am receiving from this forum. Obviously... if you really need immediate help, this is NOT the place to get it.

The post I assume you are referring to is "Help with URL issue" / "nube question about server migration"
In the "nube question about server migration" thread, Jeff responded in less than 1 hour and 15 minutes, with a 3 further 2 posts within the next 15 minutes from both you and Jeff.
The response times here vary, if you dont get a response in an hour - 2,3,4,5 or even more - just wait or email support (support@drectadmin.com).
If you posted a thread in the wrong forum or are unsure, you can just make a note either by editing your post or making a reply post stating it and the administrators will move it for you :) - if you are unsure just post it where you believe it would be most appropriate, it will be moved if needs be.

Thanks for responding. Yes, Jeff did respond an hour later as you said. I suppose that is quick for a forum of this size, as there are many users asking questions. Your point is well taken.
I apologize for the tone of my post. I was frustrated in attempting to setup this server and it showed in the post.

Forums are not good venues for fast response.
When I'm travelling I change my sig to point that out, and then I take many days to answer posts, and often don't answer at all.
When I'm at my office I read and respond several times a day.
I find email lists much better venues for support, and I'm certainly willing to set up a DA-users list if there's interest, once I return to the office later this week.
But of course I run a third-party support organization; I don't work for DA.
The forum is NOT an official support venue. Support is available from DA's support email address.

True, but everything we have needed to know about DA from a support perspective has come from experienced users on this forum. And in my opinion the responses are pretty slick and well informed. I dont recall emailing DA for direct support since we've been using DA (Nov 2003)

For the record:
Just a note on this thread, because I have seen many companies point to a support forum for support and then disclaim responsibility for its contents.
When Jeff says:
"The forum is NOT an official support venue. Support is available from DA's support email address."
This forum is linked on Direct Admin's support.html page. The description is:
"Our forum is available at http://www.directadmin.com/forum. Please check the forum before contacting us to see if your question has already been answered. The forum is also useful for getting help on topics we don't support (e.g. integrating DirectAdmin with 3rd party software)."
That sounds like a resounding endorsement of these forums as a first line of support, although admittedly, not the only available support offering (unlike Cpanel).
I think the real value of the forum is as a FAQ repository unfiltered by the all knowing tech expert and with enough residual knowledge for the “nube” tossed in. But please don’t claim that its not officially supported when the support page links to it and support request via e-mail often return responses that link to it.
Don’t get me wrong, not an attack, just clearing things up. The DA users list BTW sounds like a fantastic idea as I suspect that many potential contributors don’t have time to come here and browse each area in the forum. But, it has to be one or the other, since one would water down the usefulness of the other as a repository of answered questions.

I almost agree with you here.
And that's why I haven't started one.
But I spend a lot less time on the Cobalt-lists (even after their split) than I do on DirectAdmin forums.
I don't suppose there's any way to move the forum to a list format now that it's been so well used over such a long time, but I'd much rather read and respond on a list.
That's just me, though.
Ymmv.
Jeff
