Increasing max filedescriptors

Hi all,

I need to increase my max file descriptors on my centOS machine, but how do i exactly do this

I heared that i can increase it on the system, but apache uses a hard-setting of max files.

Do i need to recompile apache for this?

If so, how can i check i installed apache trought CustomBuild or CustomApache?

I also found this topic wich should get me started, but does anyone has a good walk-trought for centOS machines?
