View Full Version : Heads up : new CP competing with DA
netspace

I just saw an ad on WHT for the new CP+ by Psoft.net of H-sphere (being marketed by Altaire.com) Its priced same as DA at $199, volume licenses are also priced the same at $50/server. I think the pricing is specifically done to hit DA since both retail and volume prices are exactly same. See http://www.cpplus.info
I'm a DA fan converted from Plesk...but H-sphere is also a great CP. DA might have to push development on features to outrun the new CP by the H-sphere guys.

I just checked it out and with all those features it would be nice to see DirectAdmin ramp up development and reorganize the entire system and add many of their features.
http://cpplus.altaire.com/features.html
I am not suggesting that anything is lacking from DA to make is a fully functional solution but it would be neat to see all some of the features supported.
Highlights:
Apache 1 & 2 support
Sendmail or Postfix (I would rather see Exim and Qmail)
Procmail Filters
Samba
Squid Proxy
Java ssh client
Whatever its not like we would switch anytime soon!

looks like they have some extra server admin features such as configuring the linux side of the server...impressive
but they will never win me over without a lifetime license :)

Its not a competition. Their control panel lacks lots of features.
Hovewer I think its time to put nice skin that loopforever developed as default skin. Or put it on public test so everyone could quickly find all bugs and give feedback and then put it as default skin. This will be very strong argument for directadmin for new users.

I agree, CyberAlien. Only once loopforever fixes that small button text issue, however :D

CP Plus is, at us$199, actually $100 less than DA, which on the website is listed at us$299.
However, CP Plus lacks a reseller level. And according to people I've spoken to will never have a reseller level, because then it would cut into HSphere sales.

Thats a yearly license vs a lifetime license though isnt it?

I believe you're right.
I looked at CP Plus, but when I discovered it didn't have a reseller level I become disinterested very quickly.

That control panel looks a little too simular to webmin and usermin...
I didn't see it as anything near DA.

I downloaded it, and installed it locally - first impressions were, to put it mildly and politely, "yucky".
It runs an awful lot of PERL and it's hanging around in TOP way too often. CP was not easy to navigate, and lacked a reseller level. To me, it was VERY similar to Hsphere and Cpanel on the admin side, which gave me a bad taste nearly immediately.
I also thought page refreshes were very slow, even on localhost.
Had this been 8 months ago when I was searching for a new control panel, I might have considered it, albeit briefly.. and probably would have stuck with the old Ensim 3.1x. Glad I chose DirectAdmin for my customers - they couldn't be happier!
Just my 2cents (adjusted for inflation).
Long Live DA!
Rock on!

Sure they could...
For example, offer them all three years of hosting free, and throw in a weekend trip to Mazatlan as a bonus.
Then they'd be happier :) .

hmm, now this gave me another idea for a new promotion. start a new nickel and dime host and throw in a free trip for every tenth customer to the bahamas. hmm. then when it comes time to announce the winners, close up shop and run with the money. :D

I bet DA still is the top in control panel market.
I am not a technical person though but I love quality support by fine people !
Our world is not just a bunch of 0s and 1s, it is much more than that :)
Way to go DA !

I didn't tested it, but it seems very complex. But it also has
some rather nice feature's like the e-mail login and stuff like that.
So I think DA is better, but it could be a lot more better if they speed up there programming. Ofcourse it could not effect the stability of DA ;-).
But ofcourse we will stay and support DA, because it's the best.

would it be worth all the hard work setting up for the bit of revenue for the 1st 9 customers?..lol
on the subject of PSoft's latest effort..
I took a look, the screenshot looked ok. (granted, it was a small screenshot)
I got as far as the first page of the static demo and got bored.
I trialled H-Sphere both locally and through Altaire. The first was crap and the latter even worse. I would have reservations about how much of the messyness of H-Sphere spilled over into their new toy. I cant believe that people actually use that H-Sphere. I think the idea and the expandability are good but the control panel is long winded and by far overcomplicated, even for the end user's panel.
Thank goodness i came across DA! (and its API)
you got my vote DA.

Btaim (be that as it may :) ), I've been advised that CP Plus is based on Webmin.
Fwiw (For what it's worth :) ).

I had webmin on a pretty low spec server about a year ago.
The load of webmin alone was almost too much for the server and i havent used it since..
I do like the fact that you barely ever see a DA process in top. :)

It is webmin with a couple of mods and a fresh skin. I can get webmin for free, not paying $50 a year for it.

So the question is:
Is it worth it for those mods?
If yes, then yes. If no, then no.
Simple programing 101 logic.
