Dear all expert,

I'm sorry to ask such kind of stupid question here. But actually i really have no idea.

Few months ago, i discover that when i use the command "up2date -u" in my redhat 8.0 box. none of the packages updated...(but actually i read the news and many redhat 9.0 packages have the bug fix and security enhancement at that moment.)

So...if i want to update my packages to the latest version. What should i do ? i cannot find any update packages in redhat.com. ( they only have redhat 9.0 packages)

I don't believe they support redhat8 anymore.. see http://www.redhat.com/security/archives.html

but you can check the package's last update date..

the package update not frequently.
the last one is on 5/1 ....and the second one is date on 2003...

so , redhat realized that not much bugs and security update at these few months ?

what do you mean?

No updates are being shown when you do up2date -u?

Updates are shown when running up2date -u but give errors during the up2date run?

Update -u upgrades them fine whilst running, does not give errors but do not actually update?

You're not giving us much information at all.... also make sure you dont have "download only" set in your configuration which could explain it..... if you have all the rpm files in /var/spool/up2date its likely to be that.

Definitive answer:

up2date is part of RHN (The Red Hat Network).

Red Hat is no longer supporting any "Red Hat" legacy distributions except for RHL 9, which will be supported through the end of this month (April, 2004).

RHN is no longer offering updates for the "Red Hat Linux" legacy distributions except for RHL 9, which will be supported through the end of the month (April, 2004).

The last update for RHL 9 was issued in March.

Effective May 1st, RHN will only support RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux); see pricing here (http://www.redhat.com/software/rhel/purchase/), but remember that none of these are supported by DA.

You do have other options for support for old (legacy) versions of Red Hat Linux:

See the Fedora Legacy Project (http://www.fedoralegacy.org/updates/) for a free option, and Progeny Transition Service (http://transition.progeny.com/), a commercial option.

We use both services, and we offer a commercial service, which wraps Red Hat updates through all reputable paid and free services into one easy to use option (we deliver the RPMs to you in a tarball as they become available). Obviously that costs a bit more than the Progeny Transition Service, because we include it with our service, but for many the convenience is worth it.

You should keep your server updated, and there are two good options out there (Progeny tends to offer more packages, and much more quicker response than the free Fedora Legacy service). Use them, use us, use someone else; it really doesn't matter, as long as you keep your systems updated.
