Network connection dropping

Running freebsd 4.8 and I have had this happen basically once a day over the past few days. There haven't been any software updates or changes made to the system and I really have no idea where to start looking.

Ideas?

Replace the network cable and then the nic to see what's going on.. I doubt this is a software problem.

Hmmm, I hate to think this is a hardware problem but maybe you're right.
