RPM based apache on CentOS5?

Hi folks,

Installing my first DirectAdmin server, though long time unix sysadmin. Is there anything inherent to the DirectAdmin system that requires this "custom build" of apache?

Any reason we can't just use an RPM based install?

Yes.

DirectAdmin has a custom hosting stack. While you could conceivably use the RPM builds of Apache/PHP/MySQL/ etc., as long as you obtained, created and installed all the custom config files, you'd have a brittle system and a lot less flexibility.

Use custombuild :).

What config files then, and has anyone written up a howto?

I've always found apache's conf.d structure very flexible, and custom builds of apache much more difficult to maintain on a widespread basis. RPM, on the other hand for RHEL/CentOS servers is quite convenient.

If I recall correctly someone has tried it for FreeBSD, but no one I know of for Linux.

DirectAdmin was designed for flexibility and so doesn't use RPMs, which would restrict you to RPMs already created.

While in general custom builds of apache, etc., are more difficult to maintain, you'll find that DirectAdmin maintains the software well. The customapache and custombuild systems were both written for ease of use, flexibility, and robustness.

If you try to use RPMs my guess is that you'll be on your own.
