View Full Version : Backing up webmail
Does the new backup feature backup users' webmail? (For those people who store their mail on the server.)

Webmail doesnt store anything, it reads the users mail files and displays it live - if you have mail in /var/spool/virtual it will be available with webmail or any other mail client...
not sure how special folders work... if they are any different or now... although the main inbox is as mentioned above.

Yeah, I'm thinking of people who really manage their mail on the server--create folders & move mail into it; save their sent mail, etc.

But he makes a good point. John can you include a backup for the data folder in the backup feature? This is where all the users preferences and address books are located. Not 100% sure how I would want to see it work, but it might be invisable backup when you do a entire backup DA's stuff?
I just had a server crash and die, along with several users' email, so this issue is relevant to me right now.
What about the mail in /var/spool/virtual ? Is that backed up?

Hello,
the /var/spool/mail/*, /var/spool/virtual/* and /var/www/html/* will be included in the full server backup.
John

Hi and thanks for the reply.
Two questions:
The full server backup is for admins, I believe. Will there be any way for resellers to backup the folders you mention? (At least the parts of them relevant to their users?)
In the scenario where a user has created folders & stored mail in them, saved sent mail, and created an addressbook, would that data be included in the reseller-level backup? (In other words, where is that data stored?)
Thanks.

Hello,
That can be looked into.. The webmail programs arn't really considered an integral part of the system setup (ie you can remove/change them and nothing would care, other than your users). That's why it's not really done at the moment, but I'll consider adding the setup to the User backups.

Aye, there's the rub. Like I said above, I just got done having to explain to a user why his email was gone forever after my server and its hard drives died.
I'll consider adding the setup to the User backups.
OK, thanks for considering it. When you say "the setup", do you mean the actual mail and addressbook?

John,
As hard as it is to explain to a user that backing up his site didn't include backing up his webmail, I hope you'll add webmail backup to the site backup soon.
Thanks!
Jeff
