View Full Version : General questions before I buy

I have a few questions before I buy. Its looking very promising and much cheaper than cpanel etc.

1. Does DirectAdmin include mysql database usage with the quota? This is my biggest issue right now because it seems like most control panels don't monitor the mysql database and add it to that users quota.

2. If a user didn't have a domain to use or didn't want to buy one, and I could provide them with a subdomain off my own domain, how would DA handle that?

3. How often are updates released?

4. Is there any add-ons that would automate billing if I ever decided to charge for my hosting?

5. How far along is beta testing for Freebsd and is it stable for 4.9?

Thanks

Hello,

1. Does DirectAdmin include mysql database usage with the quota?
The database are included in the users' total, but isn't done in realtime. This is because the files are owned by "mysql" and not the user, so the quota sytem doesn't know who's database it is.

2. subdomains
You have 2 options
1) create a subdomain as a part of the domain. The directory is just a subdirectory and can be viewed from domain.com/sub or sub.domain.com.
2) create a whole new user, and just use "sub.domain.com" as his domain. This will give him a whole user account to play with (email, ftp, databases,.. *everything*).. DA doesn't know the difference. It just thinks it's a regular domain.

3. How often are updates released?
This varies on what's in them. If there is a fix this is urgently required, a release can be made 3 hours after the first one. But normally they average from 2 weeks to a month with new features and minor bugfixes.

4. Is there any add-ons that would automate billing if I ever decided to charge for my hosting?
You bet! :) There are several options that interface with the DirectAdmin API for automated user creation/billing. A few include whois cart, modern bill, but check out the "3rd party software" part of the forum for more details.

5. How far along is beta testing for Freebsd and is it stable for 4.9?
FreeBSD 4.9 has been out of beta for a while and is deemed "stable" by those who use it :)

But how much tweaking would I have to do to up DirectAdmin on it since it isn't listed as a supported operating system on your website?

At the moment none, it runs without a problem. We won't advertise full FreeBSD support until 5.x is done beta testing.
