dovecot installation

hello,
While installing the dovecot, suppose my installation stucks in between and i couldn't continue with the installation, does my old mail system stops ?. Is there any effect on my old (currently running) mail system.
Also after successfully installing the dovecot, which mail services will be replaced by what ? Does new mails will be delivered only to maildir or to both (maildir and mbox format).

The answers to your first question depend on why and where the installation fails.

After the conversion is finished all email will be delivered to Maildir format, and Dovecot clients for both imap and pop3 will be running.

The last step, suggested to be run after you know the Dovecot/Maildir conversion has finished properly, and Dovecot is working properly, removes the old mbox mailboxes.
