Hi,

I want to install directadmin on a dedicated server but I wondered what OS to install given all the problems with redhat winding up it's support.

Should I go with red hat 9 or red hat enterprise - does DA support RHEL? Does it plan to?

I've already read this thread:

http://www.directadmin.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1047

But need someone to show me the light! I don't want to install FreeBSD if their support is going to end relatively early too - as suggested by someone in the above thread.

Thanks!

RH9 you woud currently need, RHEL DA should be ready within 2 months I believe.

If you want to play around with some things you could try your own porting of DA onto RHEL.... im considering grabbing a basic server to try it although I need to ceck with Mark on the licensing issues.... (DA refuses to go with the wrong OS) apart from that I mcant see to much work..... a few fixes some new RPMs etc should do everything :D

Hi Chris,

Thanks for that,

What if I went with RH9 now and upgraded to RHEL when DA supports it - is that a real messy thing to do? For example will I be able to port over existing DA accounts easily enough?

Also, can I just migrate to RHEL without too much fuss. My sys-admin said that we'd have to back everything up on the RH9 machine install RHEL on another box and port everything over - surely that isn't the case is it - that's going to cause major downtime if it is!

Thanks!

The biggest problem is not with DA here, rather the fact there is no upgrade path from RH > RHEL

The easiest route of upgrading is basically what your sys-admin has said, get a second server with RHEL and DA then transfer accounts, once everything is OK switch the DNS over - it should be a simple move since all paths permissions etc should basically be the same - the only difficult part is actually packing, trasnferring, and unpacking! I will leave Mark to confirm it, although DA >DA move should be ready soon... if its not you should be able to move the DA data (accounts) across manually (Need Mark or John to confirm that also!)

There is actually minimal downtime caused with a move that is done properly - the part of the move you may dislike is simply having the second server there :)

Hello,

DA -> DA transfer is still a ways off.. we're working on it. Right now the User backups can be created, moved over and restored after the account is created.
