location of system log files

I know I can find the DA and all other log files in /var/log/ but I'm looking for log files that can explain my server crashes and I'm unable to find them in here. Any clue as to where they might be located?

Hello,

The best generic log is the /var/log/messages file. Almost all programs will log some information there (not all, but most important happenings)
