Un-password protect

I was recently hacked and while restoring my site I password protected public_html so I could clean up any holes.

Now I can't unprotect it

public_html doesn't show up in the "password protected directoies" list and I can't see the user and password when I visit the directory via filemanger, but no one can access my site.

HELP! how do I reverse password protect?

did you try to delete the .htaccess file ?
