How do I safely update Bind from 8.3.2 to the latest?
I've read this page
http://www.zytrax.com/books/dns/ch5/
Here's the questions.
1) do I need to uniinstall before installing the new version?
2) I assume I need to copy the changes in named.conf accross (well atleast make a backup before hand.)
3) are there any other issues with doing the update?

The ports system will deinstall a piece of software prior to upgrading it. It will also make a backup of the port in case the upgrade fails.
Generally speaking ports do not overwrite config files. As far as i know you can keep on using the same configs after the update.
The info on http://www.zytrax.com/books/dns/ch5/ looks fairly complete. What is it you have trouble with?
Personally i wouldn't bother and just upgrade the whole OS to 5.4.

agree with floris if you upgrade to 5.4 or wait a few weeks and goto 5.5 you will get a newer bind anyway.
