squirrelmail slowliness and IMAP errors with BIG mailboxes

Some of my users have BIG mailboxes and have started to receive
IMAP time out and IMAP server stopped responding errors while they
log into for reading their email with Squirrelmail.

Of course this seems to have been causing high load in my server.

Have you ever experienced this, how did you solved it?
Suggesting another webmail? I have noticed that Horde 3 does not
have this problem...

For your info I am using 1.45 version of Squirrelmail
This makes me remember the days of Neomail with Cpanel problems

Most of us believe the problem is caused by DA's use of mbox format instead of Maildir.

Changing is a nightmare, but some of us have been looking into making the switch.

I don't believe it's been successfully done as yet.

If you believe another webmail client is more efficient you might try switching.

This is a very old thread. DirectAdmin now allows update to Dovecot, which addresses the issue by switching servers from mbox to Maildir.
